US President Donald Trump officially launched the Board of Peace, a new international initiative aimed at addressing the Gaza conflict and broader global peace efforts, during a high-profile signing ceremony at the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, Switzerland.
Conceived and chaired by President Trump, the Board of Peace brings together a coalition of states committed to conflict resolution, post-conflict reconstruction, and long-term regional stability. Leaders and senior representatives from multiple countries signed the founding charter during the ceremony, marking the formal establishment of the initiative.
Among the signatories was Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose participation provided a visible signal of Islamabad’s engagement in emerging international peace mechanisms. Pakistan has maintained a functional and pragmatic relationship with President Trump, facilitating its inclusion in the initiative and reflecting a willingness to engage in multilateral diplomatic efforts beyond traditional United Nations–led formats.
Pakistan’s Participation and Civil-Military Representation
Prime Minister Sharif signed the charter alongside representatives from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Bahrain, Morocco, and Argentina. Pakistan’s delegation also included Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief, underscoring civil-military coordination in Pakistan’s external engagement.
While no bilateral meetings between President Trump and Pakistani leaders were officially reported, the presence of both civilian and military leadership at the signing ceremony highlighted Pakistan’s integrated approach to foreign policy and international security dialogue.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Islamabad accepted the invitation to join the Board of Peace, reiterating support for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access, and a sustainable political resolution in Gaza, consistent with international frameworks.
Global Reaction and Strategic Implications
The initiative has generated mixed reactions internationally. Some governments and analysts have expressed reservations, questioning whether the Board of Peace could overlap with existing multilateral institutions or weaken established peace processes.
Within Pakistan, political commentators and opposition figures have called for transparency and broader parliamentary consultation regarding international commitments undertaken at Davos. Supporters of participation argue that the platform enables Islamabad to advocate for humanitarian priorities, particularly in Gaza, while maintaining diplomatic visibility in evolving global forums.
Objectives of the Board of Peace
According to official statements, the Board of Peace is intended to:
- Promote peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction, beginning with Gaza.
- Support long-term regional stability through coordinated international engagement.
- Encourage humanitarian relief, institutional rebuilding, and governance reforms.
President Trump described the initiative as a framework designed to mobilise global political and financial resources in support of post-conflict recovery, particularly in the Middle East.
Looking Ahead
As the World Economic Forum concludes, Pakistan’s participation in the Board of Peace — symbolised by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s charter signing — positions Islamabad within an emerging layer of international diplomacy focused on conflict resolution beyond established multilateral mechanisms.
The initiative’s long-term relevance will depend on sustained international participation, its relationship with existing institutions, and its capacity to deliver tangible humanitarian and political outcomes in regions affected by protracted conflict.
