Neighbourhood First Policy – 57th Indo- Bangladesh Border Talk from 8-11 June 2026
In 2008 the inception of ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’ of India was to strengthen relationship with neighbouring countries Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
But the picture is not that bright as the Indian sub-continent expected to lead the region.
India – Bangladesh border issue has not been solved yet. Thus the 57th Indo-Bangladesh Border talks will be held from 8-11 June 2026 at New Delhi.
Basic agenda is security and curbing any sort of felony.
Influx from the side of Bangladesh made India to fence the border which become less of solving the problem and more of national politics.
Bangladesh shares a 4096.7-kilometre-long international border along the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

The 57th talk from 8-11 June will be hosted by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). The discussion will be with counterpart Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB).
The 57th talk is the first-time border talk after the political coup and bloodshed started in in July 2024 in Bangladesh, ousted fifteen yearlong Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign.
Behind the mask of student uprising attack on minorities, especially on Hindus added another chapter in the history of inhuman assaults on people of other religion, women and girls.
2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus took the charge of the interim caretaker government.
From 17th February 2026 Tarique Rahman became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Tarique Rahman was himself in exile about 17 years. Since he vowed not to entertain chaos, the 57th border talk is to be held with a stable government of Bangladesh.
The 57th Border Management talk will be headed by Director General Praveen Kumar from India and Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui of Bangladesh.
Critics say, lingering India-Bangladesh border issue is a choice to use the tag line in domestic politics and election campaigns by Indian leaders.
Two countries also dealing with India – Bangladesh enclave issues. As per sources there are 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh and 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in India.
While the inhabitants merged in the surroundings they face hurdles to exercise citizen rights.
The 57th border talk will be attended by Bangladeshi delegates from the Prime Minister’s Office of Bangladesh, Ministry of Foreign and Home Affairs, Ministry of Shipping.

North, South and West side of Bangladesh is surrounded by Indian states that becomes obvious region of trespassing from both sides.
According to Majaw, 2020, Shewly, 2017,
“In South Asia, like elsewhere, borderlands are heavily contested, fragile, porous, and permeable. These tensions are particularly acute because the border area is densely populated, and agricultural cultivation is carried out to the last inch of the border area by the people on both sides.”
India has unresolved territorial conflict not only with Bangladesh but with Nepal, China and Pakistan.
The Neighbourhood First Policy could not succeed in settling territorial complications with its neighbours.
Key dates referenced in the article
Before 1947 Bangladesh was a part of India. After 1947 division it was in Pakistan. In 1971 winning in its liberation war Bangladesh separated from Pakistan and became an independent country.
The then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi played a major role in the formation of independent Bangladesh. The irony is, still India and Bangladesh could not solve border dispute.
Recent win of Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman as President of the UN General Assembly’s 81st session, shows Bangladesh’s direction towards stability and peace.
Bangladeshi people share similar culture with Indians. Indian state West Bengal and Bangladesh speak the same language Bengali. From India and Bangladesh people have relatives in both sides that makes the issue more complicated and lingering to 57th talks of border disagreements needed to be converted into agreements.
